Great Golf and America’s Best Beach!

02 Jun 2011, Posted by Play Golf Sarasota in Feature, News

Sarasota already has some of the finest golfing in the country. Now, Sarasota also has the “Best Beach in America” too. Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, AKA Dr. Beach, named Sarasota’s Siesta Key Beach as the best beach in America. Dr. Beach researches various beaches in the United States and all around the World. He has developed criteria to rank each beach and completed two year survey of 650 major public recreational beaches in the United States.

Siesta Beach in Sarasota boasts that it has the finest and whitest sand in the world, and I cannot argue with this claim; the powdery sand is nearly pure quartz crystal. The beautiful blue-colored water is clean and clear, making it so inviting to bathers and swimmers. The beach is hundreds of yards wide, attracting volleyball players and beachcombers as well as those who just want to find their place in the sun.

On Sunday May 29th The Concession Golf Club hosted their 1st Annual Kid’s Fishing Tournament. Members and Guests were invited to bring out their youngsters for one hour of tournament style fishing. Three awards were given to the following winners;

First Fish Caught (Regan Panico, pictured with Mom Kristen & friend Austin Bruce). Largest Fish Caught, (people are still comparing “Fish Stories” to determine) and Most Fish Caught, winner Jack Jones.

The tournament was officiated by GCSAA golf course superintendent Terry Kennelly. Roughly 14 kids participated with a total crowd of 40 on-lookers including parents and grand-parents. Following the fishing, The Concession Bistro hosted a nice cook-out style lunch with burgers, hot dogs, and ice cream sandwich’s that were a hit on the warm day.

To the delight of everyone, all contestants caught at least one fish and there was even a small alligator that excited the crowd when he realized that taking the fish off a hook was easier than catching them while they swim free. All kids and parents got a nice tee-shirt to commemorate the day but most of all the memories.

Sarasota, FL – May 10, 2011: Play Golf Sarasota Media Group, publisher of Play Golf Sarasota magazine and Gulfshore Media, LLC, publisher of award-winning SARASOTA Magazine, are joining forces to present local golf facilities to their combined readership of vacationers, second-home buyers and residents interested in golfing lifestyles.

Play Golf Sarasota features full-length profiles of golf courses in Sarasota, Manatee and Charlotte counties. Starting in October, abbreviated course profiles will appear in a special section within SARASOTA Magazine, a monthly city/lifestyle magazine with distribution to all 50 states and 10 countries.

“When we started two years ago, our goal was to showcase the Sarasota area as a premier golf and lifestyle destination,” said Mark Bruce, PGA Professional and co-owner of Play Golf Sarasota. “SARASOTA Magazine will help us carry this message across the country and world, plus reach local audiences we previously could not reach.”

“This partnership continues our commitment to our readers to always show the best in the Sarasota area. Our readers include a significant number of avid golfers so Play Golf is a perfect addition to the magazine,” said Kelley Lavin, Group Publisher and Executive Vice President of Gulfshore Media.

In addition to its publication, Play Golf Sarasota has developed a client base of more than 500 customers who have enjoyed a golf vacation using the firm’s personal concierge service. Spearheaded by Tony Panico, co-owner and PGA professional, the concierge service helps groups of all sizes to plan golf-focused trips. “We manage the hotel bookings, golf tee times, suggest local places to eat, and even organize transportation,” Panico said. “Showing them the best golf vacation experience possible helps sell them on Sarasota overall.”

What allows Play Golf Sarasota to stand apart from Internet booking sites or other vacation planning groups is deep local knowledge and personalized service, but especially the PGA Professional credentials of its owners. “Golfers know and trust the PGA brand and we run our business on the fundamental principles of the game of golf, honesty and integrity,” Bruce said.

The odds are certainly “astronomical” for the average golfer to make a hole in one, but to have a married couple both make holes in one during the same round of golf while playing together is off the charts. Misty Creek Country Club  played host to Ray and Peg Beers on March 21, 2011, and they had a great da.  Ray aced the 4th hole and Peg aced the 12th hole while playing together in the same group.

Ray and Peg recently bought a property in The Meadows Country Club and escape to Sarasota from Buffalo, NY for 3-4 months of winter. They were playing Misty Creek C.C. with freinds from Buffalo, Mr. & Mrs. Kujawski, who call Misty Creek home in the winter. The Beers are members at East Aurora C.C. in Buffalo.  East Aurora C.C. is most know for hosting the International Jr. Masters golf tournament.

After completing their round, Ray & Peg were gracious enough to go into the bar and offer those still there a round of drinks, as is customary when making a hole in one. Lucky for them, only a couple of people were still there due to the time of day and they only wanted a sodt drink. Needless to say, Ray & Peg, enjoyed a Beer !!!

The Concession Golf Club recently named Barry Hinckley its new PGA Head Golf Professional. Barry brings with him 20 years of experience in the golf industry. After receiving his Bachelor’s Degree from Stetson University, where he was a member of the Men’s Golf Team for all four years, Barry embarked on a ten year playing career on various tours.

Barry began his Private Club professional career as an assistant professional at Scioto Country Club in Columbus, OH. Barry is a Class A Member of the PGA of America and was awarded the Southern Ohio Section’s Assistant Professional of the Year award in 2010.
