Sun Protection Tips for Golfers

02 Jul 2010, Posted by Play Golf Sarasota in Health

Use an effective sunscreen

The best protection is not to be in the sun. We all know this isn’t possible while golfing. You can protect yourself by using an effective sunscreen. An effective sunscreen blocks both UVA and UVB rays. I know. Most golfers don’t think they need it. But, most golfers forget a round of golf can take four hours to play and we usually play while the sun is at its hottest. There’s just no avoiding the sun. Therefore, an effective sunscreen is very important.

Re-apply sunscreen at the turn.

The next big tip is reapplying sunscreen. The effectiveness of sunscreen decreases the longer you are out in the sun, especially if you’re sweating. I was told a good rule is to re-apply sunscreen every two hours. But, who watches the time on a golf course? Instead of trying to time it, just reapply your sunscreen at the turn (after 9 holes).

Replace your sunscreen regularly

Typically, sunscreen loses its effectiveness over time. Heat also decreases the effectiveness of sunscreen. That sunscreen you’ve been keeping in your golf bag might be just skin lotion. Have you ever wondered why you got sunburned after applying that old sunscreen you had in your bag? Try and replace your sunscreen at the start of the new golf season. A tube of sunscreen shouldn’t last a whole golf season if you use it regularly!

Wear sun protective clothing.

Another thing golfers can do to protecting themselves from the sun is to wear protective clothing, especially a wide-brimmed hat. Wide brimmed hats aren’t as cool looking as the Nike Visor or Calloway Hat, but they protect your face, nose, ears, and neck a lot better.

There are clothing lines that use fabric to help protect your skin. Fabric is rated using an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UCF). UCF is very similar to the SPF rating for sunscreens. Sun Precautions® and Solumbra® are both brands of sun protective clothing.

Play “shade” golf.

During hot Florida summers, the most important thing a golf can learn is “shade golf”. Basically, try and position yourself in shade whenever possible. It’ll get you out of the sun and keep you cooler. In Florida, keeping cool is necessary when playing a round of golf in the summer.

Sara Bay Country Club is hosting multiple tournaments this summer. These tournaments include:

  • July 19, 2010 – Greater Sarasota Junior Golf Association
  • September 5, 2010 – USGA Mid Ameteur, Sectional Qualifier
  • September 11 & 12, 2010 – FSGA Mid Senior Fourball Championship
  • October 12, 2010 – FSGA One Day Event

Watch Your Ball

02 Apr 2010, Posted by Play Golf Sarasota in Golf Tips

It is important to watch your ball after you hit it.  In fact, watch your ball until it stops, and then make note of the landmarks nearby.   This will help you find your ball.  Most new golfers lose way too many balls.  Not because it was a really bad shot, but due to the fact they look away in frustration when the ball doesn’t take the path they had imagined.  Pace of play slows down when you can’t find your ball.  Lose your ball and you get a penalty unless you cheat.  Plus, it can be expensive to keep buying balls.
